Rugged, well-organized quality convertible duffle
This is the best duffle bag we've ever bought hands down and our favorite L.L. Bean bag!
We have used L.L. Bean bags for the past 2+ decades and have never been disappointed in the quality. They continue to keep taking abuse and holding up incredibly well. This bag is even more rugged and we love the more useable shape and interior organization compared to our other L.L. Bean duffle bags.
It is very rugged, durable, and amazingly water-resistant. The inner organization is very handy and helps keep gear organized. The zippers are high quality and the material is very resistant to tears and soiling.
It can fit a surprising amount of gear thanks to its mostly square shape - perfect for airline travel with almost no wasted space, and also easier to carry than a rounder duffle bag.
Contrary to what some reviews mentioned, the top portion of the shoulder straps above the shoulder pads are fully adjustable, once you know how they are supposed to connect to the bag.
When we first got this, we were stymied by the shoulder straps, which seemed ridiculously long at the top, causing the bag to hang too low...until we looked more closely at the close-up picture on the website of the upper strap connection and realized they are completely adjustable not only at the bottom below the shoulder padding, but also at the top between the padding and the bag!
The upper end of each strap is threaded through the corresponding loops on the bag, then clipped into one of the horizontal webbing straps on the padded shoulder harness, depending on the desired length. This makes it totally adjustable for different heights! We included a picture showing how thes straps can be adjusted differently for different height people (one strap is at the longest height, one at a medium height).
It would have been very helpful if L.L. Bean had included instructions for this since it is not the usual way shoulder straps connect on convertible bags and customers can miss the non-intuitive shoulder strap setup and think that this bag makes a terrible backpack.
We use the 40L bag for carry-on travel and the larger bags for wilderness medical and climbing gear.
These bags are definitely worth the price, having such high quality materials, great shape, good inner organization, and convertibility into a backpack.

I gave this to my grandson as a high school graduation gift. He loved it and then used it on a trip up north with 3 friends. It had room for all his stuff.
