Will discourage a beginner
Aimed at the entry level fisher, this rod may do more to discourage a beginner. It’s probably fine for an experienced fisher to use as a travel or “keep it in the car” rod, but only someone with the experience to know when to break this rod out. For someone hoping a general purpose 5-wt will be a good all-around rod, this is disappointing. The action is too nimble for distant casts but too stiff for finesse on small streams. It’s just clumsy feeling. The reel seat is cheap, and the components are slightly “meh.” And given that plenty of other companies offer better rods (and combos) at this price point for beginners, this rod is rather pointless. This is a rod for someone walking into LL Bean thinking “I think I’ll try something outdoorsy.”

Streamlight on Allagash Lake.
Used this rod on Allagash Lake in June. Performed great . Caught up to 16" Brookie's with it and the rod handled them with no problem. Has good casting performance for the cost.

Rod tip breaks
I have tried using two of these rods now with the same outcome. The end of the rod breaks about 3 inches from the tip. I am not careless with my rod and have no idea why the first rod broke. The second tip broke as I tried to free my fly from some weeds across the stream. While I would not recommend this rod, I am happy with LL Bean for standing behind their product and refunding my money.

LL Bean's fine entry level rod
This is a good fly rod for a beginner or anyone needing a good quality, low cost rod. I doubt if I would catch more fish with a more expensive rod. This was actually a replacement. The tip of the original rod failed (broke) for no apparent reason while casting and LL Bean replaced it free of charge!! We really appreciate that and the quick turnaround.

Extremely versatile rod
I've fished large rivers to small streams with this rod and it has always performed very well. The guides are good and the stiff flex is perfect for my casting style. Definitely recommend this rod to anyone and everyone. I also own a 6'6" 3wt Streamlight that I bought years ago (I don't believe LL Bean makes it anymore). It is my go-to rod for small streams and a joy to fish. I wish they would bring it back to the Streamlight series. I have videos on youtube fishing both of these rods - Polarized Outdoors if you'd like to see it in action.
